We encourage those who have lost a loved one to HIV/AIDS to leave a message of love, so that we can help alleviate the stigma, shame, and silence surrounding the pandemic.  We encourage the use of this space for communal healing, letting ourselves and others know that we are not alone.

Torrey Edwards

Inspiration for the Standing-n-Truth Project came with the unexpected death of my best friend Torrey Edwards, a wonderful person with a beautiful voice.  We had so much fun together just as  best friend do.  Actually he was like a pesty little brother who would borrow money and never give it back.  He represents hundreds of African Americans who test late for HIV, and once tested discover that they have AIDS.      The last words I got to say to him was about “Standing in truth.”  It is with this movement that I hope his story inspires others to get tested and to not walk in fear any longer, afraid of what others perceive them to be.

How can we have compassion for even the least of them?  After meeting Terri I had a new respect for transgendered individuals.  She challenged me to face my own internal fears about shame and sexuality.  She was loving and just wanted to be love for who she organically believed she was.  She died keeping her HIV status a secret, in fear of being judged.  So she decided moved from Chicago to Los Angeles to die alone where no one would know her.  I believe she was afraid to add one more thing to be rejected by to here list.  I continue to do this because of voices like hers, who may be afraid to speak out and say “Love me too”
